June 29, 10 AM Update: The National Weather Service has provided additional record reports for Needles and Death Valley, California and Kingman, Arizona, included in the table below.
The 115° at Las Vegas was the first time that level was reached in June since 1994. It was also the hottest June temperature at Needles since 1994. At Kingman, it was the second earliest 110° temperature; the earliest was June 16, 1917. That also ties the all-time June record.
Original Post:
It was historically hot in the desert Southwest today. Over a dozen major National Weather Service climate locations in Arizona, Nevada and interior California tied or broke temperature records for June 28, in some cases by big margins. The highest readings in absolute terms were 118° at Palm Springs, California, which tied its 1979 record, and at Yuma, Arizona. Yuma climate records began nearly 140 years ago, in 1876. The previous record of 116° was tied 3 times, but it was soundly broken by a margin of 2°. At Winnemucca, Nevada the previous record of 101° was set just 3 years ago in a climate history which dates back to 1877, but this was surpassed by an impressive margin of 4°.
Here's a preliminary summary of today's records (POR indicates first year of period of record):

Triple-Digit Temperatures Crush Northern Plains/Midwest Heat Records;
All-Time May Record at Sioux City

Image (click to enlarge): U.S. daily high temperatures for May 14, 2013, from Unisys
While Mid Atlantic residents were complaining about the unseasonable cold temperatures on Tuesday, heat records were being crushed in the Northern Plains and upper Midwest. As shown in the table below, triple-digit readings smashed long-standing May 14 daily records, with a margin as much as 7° at Norfolk, Nebraska. At Sioux City, Iowa, the 106° high also broke the all-time May maximum temperature record. Sioux City climate records date back to 1889. At both Omaha and Lincoln, Nebraska, it was the earliest 100° temperature on record, surpassing the previous records of 5/29/1934 and 5/24/1967, respectively.

The map below, from NOAA/ESRL, shows the temperature departures from average (°C) for the U.S. It shows that nearly all of the country was at least 2°C above or below average, but the positive departures significantly outweighed the negative, both in area and magnitude.

The temperature extremes were a reflection of a strongly anomalous circulation pattern shown in the map below. A very strong ridge of high pressure extended from the eastern Pacific to the Great Lakes at the 500 mb level (near the middle of the atmosphere), while a deep low pressure area was located off the Mid Atlantic coast.

The National Weather Service report for the record at Sioux City:
AT 135 PM THE TEMPERATURE REACHED 106 DEGREES AT THE SIOUX CITY GATEWAY AIRPORT ESTABLISHING A NEW RECORD DAILY MAXIMUM TEMPERATURE FOR THIS DATE AND A NEW RECORD FOR THE HIGHEST TEMPERATURE FOR THE MONTH OF MAY. While Denver Hosts Coldest Playoff Game, Heat Records Outscore Cold Records 50-3
The Denver Broncos may have lost their coldest NFL playoff game yesterday (go Ravens!), but the real record-breaking temperatures were observed east of the Mississippi on January 12. At least 50 major National Weather Service locations in 14 states set new record high temperature records, listed in the table below. By contrast, only 3 comparable low temperature records were set, in California and Oregon, and all with periods of record under 45 years.

U.S. Record Warmest Year Confirmed by Unprecedented Margin

Midnight Update: The standard deviation of the U.S. annual average temperatures is 0.92, so the new record exceeds the old one by over 1 standard deviation. It's also more than 3.4 standard deviations from the average. According to a public domain table of the normal distribution, the odds of this are 0.0003369. If the distribution were truly random (hint, it ain't), this would be a once in 2968 year event.
Original Post:
The National Climatic Data Center's preliminary report, released within the last hour, confirms that 2012 was the record warmest year for the U.S. by an incredible margin of 1.0°F. All 48 contiguous states were warmer than average for the year, 19 had record warm years, and 26 more had top 10 warmest years. At least 356 individual locations tied or broke their all-time record high temperatures. This included at least one location in every state except Washington.
The NCDC chart of year-to-date temperatures (click to enlarge) to the right shows that the extremely warm January and March put 2012 firmly in first place for warmest year and the wide margin was maintained through December.
The chart of warmest 12-month periods shows that 10 of the top 12 ended in 2012.
From the NCDC report:
In 2012, the contiguous United States (CONUS) average annual temperature of 55.3°F was 3.3°F above the 20th century average, and was the warmest year in the 1895-2012 period of record for the nation. The 2012 annual temperature was 1.0°F warmer than the previous record warm year of 1998. Since 1895, the CONUS has observed a long-term temperature increase of about 0.13°F per decade. The preliminary list of individual all-time records from NCDC:
On a statewide and seasonal level, 2012 was a year of both temperature and precipitation extremes for the United States. Each state in the CONUS had annual temperatures which were above average. Nineteen states, stretching from Utah to Massachusetts, had annual temperatures which were record warm. An additional 26 states had one of their 10 warmest years. Only Georgia (11th warmest year), Oregon (12th warmest), and Washington (30th warmest) had annual temperatures that were not among the ten warmest in their respective period of records.

Record Warm Year in Southeast
The National Weather Service's non-standard format and schedule for reporting climate summaries makes this a bit difficult to track in a systematic way, but several major NWS locations with long data histories in the Southeast observed record or near-record warm annual average temperatures in 2012. (Previous posts have covered annual records set in the Mid Atlantic, Northeast, and Midwest.)
Florida:
...TAMPA CLIMATE SUMMARY FOR 2012... ...2ND WARMEST YEAR SINCE RECORDS BEGAN IN 1890... THE 2012 YEARLY AVERAGE TEMPERATURE OF 74.8 DEGREES RANKS AS THE 2ND WARMEST YEAR SINCE RECORDS BEGAN IN 1890. THE WARMEST YEAR HAD AN AVERAGE TEMPERATURE OF 75.3 DEGREES WHICH OCCURRED IN 1990. ...FORT MYERS CLIMATE SUMMARY FOR 2012... ...3RD WARMEST YEAR SINCE RECORDS BEGAN IN 1902... THE 2012 YEARLY AVERAGE TEMPERATURE OF 76.2 DEGREES RANKS AS THE 3RD WARMEST YEAR SINCE RECORDS BEGAN IN 1902. THE WARMEST YEAR HAD AN AVERAGE TEMPERATURE OF 76.6 DEGREES WHICH OCCURRED IN 1994.
The year 2012 had an average temperature of 69.9 degrees, which was 2.1 degrees above normal. This ties with 1998 for the 2nd warmest year on record in Tallahassee, behind only 1949 which had an average temperature of 70.1 degrees. The coldest temperature of the year was 18 degrees on the morning of Janaury 4th. This tied the record low for the date. No other daily record low temperatures were recorded for the remainder of the calendar year. Freezing temperatures were observed on only 15 days this year. The last freeze of the 2011-2012 season occurred on Valentine's Day. This is about a month earlier than usual.
...PENSACOLA......WARMEST YEAR ON RECORD... THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE FOR 2012 WAS 70.7 DEGREES WHICH BROKE THE RECORD FOR THE WARMEST YEAR ON RECORD PREVIOUSLY SET IN 1974 OF 70.0 DEGREES. THIS WAS 2.8 DEGREES ABOVE THE NORMAL ANNUAL TEMPERATURE OF 67.9 DEGREES.
Georgia:
2012 average temperatures were above normal for the year by 1 to 2 degrees (which was the 2nd warmest on record at Alma and St Simons Island across SE Georgia), these were set in motion by the well above-normal readings the first half of the year.

All-Time Heat Record in Tasmania
An intense summer heatwave with temperatures in excess of 45°C in mainland Australia has spilled over to Tasmania, where Hobart has reported its all-time record hottest day in 132 years of climate data on January 4 (Australian time). Weather Channel Australia reports:
Hobart recorded it’s hottest day in 132 years of records just before 2pm today, with 41.3˚C. This broke the previous record of 40.8˚C recorded on January 4, 1976.
Overnight the temperature in Hobart remained above 25˚C, 13˚C above average and the warmest part of the state. The official low will be recorded as 23.6˚C from 9am yesterday, Hobart's highest January minimum on record.
The extreme heat is due to a northerly airstream from the mainland. The northerlies will strengthen today, causing severe to extreme fire dangers through eastern, central and northern Tasmania.

Record Warmest Year in Midwest
The National Weather Service has reported that 2012 was the record or near-record warmest year at many major climate locations across all of the Midwest. Most of these include periods of record dating back at least a century:
Illinois: THE AVERAGE TEMEPRATURE FOR 2012 FOR CHICAGO WAS 54.5 DEGREES...MAKING THIS THE WARMEST YEAR ON RECORD. THE PREVIOUS RECORD WAS 54.4 DEGREES IN 1921. RECORDS FOR CHICAGO DATE BACK TO 1872. THE AVERAGE TEMEPRATURE FOR 2012 FOR ROCKFORD WAS 53.1 DEGREES...MAKING THIS THE WARMEST YEAR ON RECORD. THE PREVIOUS RECORD WAS 52.8 DEGREES IN 1931. RECORDS FOR ROCKFORD DATE BACK TO 1906. 2012 RANKED AS THE SECOND WARMEST YEAR ON RECORD FOR BOTH PEORIA AND SPRINGFIELD. AN UNUSUALLY WARM JANUARY THROUGH JULY PERIOD...INCLUDING UNPRECEDENTED MARCH TEMPERATURES...CONTRIBUTED TO THE OVERALL WARMTH THIS YEAR. THE TOP FIVE WARMEST YEARS ARE LISTED BELOW. RECORDS FOR PEORIA DATE BACK TO 1883...AND SPRINGFIELD DATE BACK TO 1879. PEORIA 1) 1931 - 55.6 F 2) 2012 - 55.4 F 3) 1921 - 55.2 F 4) 1938 - 54.2 F 5) 1941 - 54.0 F SPRINGFIELD 1) 1931 - 57.5 F 2) 2012 - 57.3 F 3) 1921 - 57.1 F 4) 1938 - 57.0 F 5) 1946 - 56.6 F Missouri:2012 was the 2nd warmest and 10th driest year on record for Springfield. While overall average temperatures were the 2nd warmest on record...2012 did feature the warmest average high temperatures ever recorded...at 71 degrees. The previous record was 70.1 degrees...set in 2006.
The temperature never fell into the single digits in 2012...which is a rarity. In fact...through new years morning...it has been a record 690 days (and counting) since single digit temperatures were last observed in Springfield. The previous record was 406 days...ending on March 10 1998. Temperatures last fell into the single digits in Springfield on February 11 2011...when the low temperature was 5 degrees.
Persistently warm weather greeted much of the eastern three-quarters of the country in the year 2012, including the bi-state region. In fact, 2012 was the warmest calendar year on record at St. Louis, MO (KSTL) and Columbia, MO (KCOU), and 8th warmest ever at Quincy, IL (KUIN). The record warmth in 2012 was especially bolstered during meteorological spring (March - May) where the month of March at all three locations experienced record warmth. Summer was also well above normal, with all three sites in the top 10 warmest on record. Detailed lists of the top 10 warmest calendar years can be found below:
