A cooler-than-average meteorological summer (June-August) in much of the Midwest ended yesterday with some daily cold temperature records being set. The National Weather Service reports for August 31:

BREAKS THE OLD RECORD OF 48 DEGREES LAST SET IN 1992.
DURING METEOROLOGICAL SUMMER...LA CROSSE MUNICIPAL AIRPORT HAD AN
AVERAGE TEMPERATURE OF 68.3 DEGREES. THIS WAS 3.5 DEGREES BELOW THE
NORMAL OF 71.8 DEGREES. THIS TIES 1902 AND 1985 FOR THE 14TH
COLDEST SUMMER. THE LAST TIME LA CROSSE WAS THIS COLD DURING A
SUMMER WAS BACK IN 2004 WHEN THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE WAS
67.8 DEGREES. THE COLDEST SUMMER OCCURRED BACK IN 1915 WHEN THE
AVERAGE TEMPERATURE WAS 65.5 DEGREES.
